Google and Wananchi Group (K) Ltd Wazi Wi-Fi move to install high-speed, publicly-accessible internet hotspots is set to get more people utilise internet as it spreads across the country from the current 6 percent.
The initiative will allow users to access unlimited internet on the go just after a single log in.
According to Google this will get more people online apart from just connecting them to their loved ones.
Joseph Mucheru, Google SSA Ambassador and Kenya Country Lead said last week Thursday: “Giving people access to the internet via Wazi Wi-Fi will help improve penetration of the internet and utilization of the capacity we have, that is currently underused. The cost structure of the service helps break the cost barrier, which limits number of people using the internet.”
According to Mucheru, of 8400G of the national Internet capacity only 6 percent is in use.
Wazi Wi-Fi will therefore partner to launch a one point payment gateway for all networks in a move to increase internet uptake across the country.
As it seeks to bring together wireless hotspot owners, Mobile Service Operators, Internet Service Providers, Cable service providers and other firms to cover the country and the entire East African region with single sign on wireless networks, Wazi Wi-Fi has already deployed over 400 Wi-Fi Access Points in 200 hotspot locations in Nairobi and Mombasa.
The service is also rolling out wireless hotspots in malls cafes, restaurants, and bars.
Users can access this vast hotspot network with an instant sign-on using MPESA, Airtel Money, PesaPal etc from a low price of Ksh 50 per day to a monthly fee of just Ksh 500 for unlimited connectivity .
The partnerships will make it convenient for users as they won’t be required to sign up again incase they leave one mall or restaurant to another.
According to Riyaz Bachani, Group CTO at Wananchi Group, easy connectivity will lead to increased and better usage: “We have a good number of hotspots in Nairobi and we are looking to increase our reach to other towns to net in more customers and spread the benefit of internet.”
Wi-Fi has become an actual utility in offices, restaurants, theaters and many other social places. Most smartphones, netbooks, laptops and tablets now include Wi-Fi by default. Wi-Fi has become an integral part of the various connectivity options available to users who are looking to be always connected. Having a seamless, affordable and readily available connection ensures that people are well connected, which enhances their productivity.
