Zimbabwe’s mobile operator Econet Wireless has been taken to court by two tribal chiefs seeking 2000 cows in compensation in what they say the mobile network desecrated a tribal shrine when it was setting up a base station.
Chief Shumba, Mr Mugaviri Chikava told the media,”We have summoned Econet Wireless to appear before a traditional court on December 5 this year at Chamakondo Traditional Court in Masvingo Central.”
Chikava added, “We are demanding to be paid 2 000 head of cattle by Econet Wireless and all these cattle should be white in colour, Econet Wireless should also buy some special cloths, which we are going to use to appease our ancestors.”
Tribal chiefs Murinye and Mugabe also accuse Econet of exhuming human remains in a traditional shrine and defiling the dead and further destroying the shrine’s relics.
Murinye and Mugabe earlier sought a court order to block the telco from constructing the base station but failed, they have now taken Econet Wireless to a Tribal Court and are demanding 2,000 white cows to appease the remains of their ancestors scattered by the telcos workers.
The firm said indeed the construction disturbed human remains but no word was said about the case.
