Guest Post By Richard Rayne, Managing Director of iLearn SA.
Education and skills availability remains one of the most talked about and most controversial issues in South Africa. It is not surprising that experts in the field of education and training are feeling the pressure – and it is also expected that some believe that it is essential to ‘switch off’ from social networks and take a proper break.
Richard Rayne is the Managing Director of iLearn, a national specialist provider of ONSITE instructor-led and ONLINE e-learning training methodologies. He believes people, in general, have become resilient to stress and it is only when one ‘unplugs’ that one realises how important it is to have time out.
“Unfortunately, it is only when you burn out that you realise how necessary it is to have a break!,” says Rayne.
As the executive leader of a progressive, established and fully empowered training institute, Rayne knows only too well the stress and strain that goes hand-in-hand with managing operations that are focused on client service and on making a difference in society.
The company advocates a combination of instructor-led and online training – or blended learning – as the best approach to learning and to equipping people with the necessary skills to add immediate value to the market.
It is the core offering of the business and keeps everyone very, very busy!
So much so that Rayne closes the office during the holiday season, which, he says, forces him to take the necessary time out and not become engrossed in business distractions. It also allows him to spend time with his family.
“Family is very important to me and because I travel to Johannesburg and Durban throughout the year, it’s a great time to really connect with your loved ones for a long period of time. I like being in nature, especially along the garden route whether it’s on the beach or in the forests with my family,” he adds.
However, as is the case with most businesses that are reliant upon technology to ensure consistent ‘uptime’, management at iLearn are never too far away from connectivity.
For Rayne it is impossible to totally abstain from technology and he has Internet access whenever he goes on vacation. “However, I limit access to the evenings and only for an hour or two at most,” he says.
He describes social networking and social media as “a great advantage” which allows immediate connectivity to business and personal networks.
But, the family’s wellbeing is a top priority and Rayne knows that boundaries must be established to regulate what devices his children access, when and where.
At the same time, he realises that as they grow older, this may become more of a challenge! Such is the nature of our tech-focused society.
