After a record-breaking Cyber Monday, Transaction Wireless, global leader in multi-channel digital gift cards and integrated marketing solutions, expected December 24, 2012 will be the biggest day of the year for digital gift card sales. With more merchants offering digital gift card options delivered via mobile, email and Facebook, consumers have more choices to extend their holiday shopping down ‘til the very last minute. Combine these new options with consumers adopting more digital lifestyles, and the result is Christmas Eve becomes a large shopping day for digital gift cards.
“Trends from our previous year’s digital gift card sales during the fourth quarter holidays and growth in popularity, have helped us predict that December 24 will be the biggest day for sales,” says Thomas Niedbalski, Senior Vice President of Business and Client Development, Transaction Wireless. “As expected, we’ve already seen an uptick in digital gift card sales in the days leading up to Christmas, which is also a great indicator that December 24 will be the peak of the season. One of the reasons is that last minute shoppers find digital gift cards as the perfect gift and convenient for someone they may have forgotten on their list, leading them to purchase on that specific day.”
In addition to last minute shoppers, both merchant’s increase in digital gift card promotions and the rapid growth in consumer adoption contribute to the peak of sales on the 24th. Based on the 2011 whitepaper conducted by Aberdeen Group with Transaction Wireless, 76% of consumers surveyed planned to adopt digital gift cards in the near future. A year later, these projections have come to fruition with the majority of online gift card purchases migrating to digital.
Lastly, gift cards continue to be a popular gift amongst consumers with 81.1% to purchase a gift card this season including digital gift cards, as stated by The National Retail Federation (NRF). With only a few days left until Christmas, digital gift solutions allow holiday shoppers to save time and avoid the aggravation of traffic, parking and waiting in long lines at crowded malls.
Digital gift card benefits also include:
- Ease of shopping from a mobile device or computer
- Personalization features such as adding text, audio, video, and a photo for a special touch
- Ability to gift distant relatives, military, friends, and more that are remote, in real time
- Immediate or scheduled delivery
- Zero shipping fees
- Recipients enjoy the flexibility of a gift card (The NRF states that 59.8% of Americans still prefer a gift card for the holidays)
- Recipients have an easy way to store gift cards directly to a mobile device or within their email
