According to MiName, a South African startup one’s information is big business for cold call companies.
The startup says there are companies out there that steal information when one joins a competition, subscribes to a list or fills in a form.
They say that fraudulent firms sell user information to cold callers who nag innocent people with unsolicited calls, emails and SMS’s.
MiName argues that instead individuals should be making money from their own information.
MiName says, “When you request products and services on the website, we send your requests to companies you choose. After you complete a purchase, MiName pays you for your information. So you benefit from your information. Isn’t that how it should be?”
Their promise is that an individuals information should be theirs and one should choose who has it and who doesn’t and whoever gets it should pay for it.
The firm says,” And what’s more you should benefit from it, not some shady strangers. That’s why we promise to let you control your information and pay you for its value! Have a look at our privacy charter.”
On their site the team of three, 2 actuaries and an engineer, say their idea came from the injustice of cold calling, they add that no one would handle it anymore. They thought there must be a better way.
They say,” Companies are wasting resources on calling millions of people who do not want their products to find the proverbial needle in the haystack while everyone else is hassled and has their privacy invaded.”
Now this is awesome; we shall bring you the full story when they are available for interview.
