The startup based in Nairobi, Kenya launched its Android Application Thursday 27th January 2013 to coincide with Intel’s entry into the African Smartphone market, with the YOLO Smartphone.
Waabeh [ Waa- Bay] means awesome in sheng, a hybrid slang language of English and Swahili. The founders say they are are solving the problem of discovery and distribution of audio continent from Africa and allow users tolisten, download, and buy audio content online.
The team adds that invisibility is worse than piracy, is arguably the single most compelling challenge facing producers of audio content from Africa, on how to get product to people quickly and painlessly. Discovery and Distribution forms the backbone our vision for a solution focused on ease of use and mobility.
The platform now has over 1000tracks of music, podcasts and audio books from our partnerships with artists, publishers and local record companies and are spreading to East and Central Africa by mid this year. Users can pay are via mobile money as well as major credit cards.
