Buni TV, the fast-growing video-on-demand platform for African content, announced today the hiring of Julie MacArthur as Director of Content Acquisition.
MacArthur will be in charge of leading content curation and licensing for Buni TV, as the platform gears up to launch its premium subscription offer.
“Julie has a deep knowledge of and love for African film, and a very keen sense of where the industry is going. We’re very excited to welcome her to the Buni TV team and are looking forward to benefit from her expertise as we continue to grow our catalogue of content,” said Buni TV CEO Marie Lora-Mungai.
Dr. Julie MacArthur holds a PhD in African history from the University of Cambridge and has taught African history and culture at universities across Canada, the UK and East Africa. She currently holds posts as an Assistant Professor of African history at the University of British Columbia and as a Visiting Scholar with the Makerere Institute for Social Research in Kampala, Uganda. MacArthur has worked as a programming associate with the Toronto International Film Festival and Film Africa in London and served as the Director of the Cambridge African Film Festival for several years. She has curated film programmes and regularly participates in film workshops and festivals across North America, Africa and the UK.
“One of the most frustrating things about programming the amazing and varied films coming out of Africa is the lack of distribution opportunities, inside and outside the continent,” said MacArthur. “Buni TV has pioneered a novel online distribution platform from and for Africa, one that speaks directly to how people on the continent find and consume content.
