We covered Sunglasses.com.ng last year November after their first month in business and saw why Sunglasses.com wanted to be the largest online store for glasses, prescription lenses and sunglasses in Nigeria. The portal sells a range of original designer glasses to protect eyes, make users look stylish, feel good or just have fun in the summer sun.
Nigeria’s Amazing eCommerce Potential
According to Jaime Moreno Nigeria has an amazing potential for eCommerce with it’s over 160 million population, over 100 million mobile phone subscribers and over 45 million internet users.
Moreno says,” With those numbers it´s the first country to target to show the potential of Africa.”
Moreno adds that Nigerians love style and are hardworking and needed original glasses and beauty products as a value for their money. So Sunglasses.com.ng sources glasses directly from manufacturers and licensed wholesalers internationally and according to him there is increasing demand especially in the prescription glasses.
Moreno says the firm was also out to fill the gaps in the market as ”sight glasses are an aesthetic and useful item but the choice was very limited. So from Sunglasses, they from November 1 began selling prescription glasses online, with a very large variety, which is something Nigerians were expecting. With very little true competition in the market as no one is yet bringing the full latest collection of Ray-Ban, Gucci, Prada among others and sell them at European prices.
100% Original & Authentic Brand Names
He says, “All of our products are supplied by authorized manufacturers and are 100% original, authentic brand names. Shop online at anytime and anywhere and you’ll be looking good in no time. Sunglasses is committed to the highest level of customer service. We want to delight you every time you shop with us and are committed to giving you a shopping experience that is fast, convenient and secure.”
Sunglasses.com.ng also promises to save clients time and effort with its free door-to-door delivery with 14 day returns. At the moment Sunglasses has embarked on educating masses of the possibility of buying glasses online. To him educating the market is key.
Africa Is The Next Big Market
The financed startup is so sure that Africa is the next big eCommerce market.
Moreno says,” Everyone has been talking about Africa for the past few years and how much potential it had, however, before nine months ago did eCommerce players start to show up. African people will most likely leapfrog to eCommerce, same as they did with from GSM mobiles to 4G.
Africa has a population of over a billion and most of this have mobile phones and have access to the internet via web. As mobile phones get popular with nearly 700 million devices on the continent coupled by the popularity of mobile money, businesses are also going mobile to reach their clients, Africa therefore is an amazing market, no only for mobile phones but even for telecoms, ISPs, eCommerce giants and mobile banking providers.
Kenya’s Safaricom just launched Mshwari, a mobile saving platform for use by the unbanked. This shows where Africa is headed. Mobile eCommerce, where people can buy, sell and save or get loans via their mobile phones.
Sunglasses.com.ng stocks original Ray-Ban, Prada, Gucci and Oakley and other international designer glasses for both men and women and children. The firm is probably the first in Africa to sell sunglasses online and though Moreno says the firm’s expansion plans are confidential, there is a high possibility of opening shop in South Africa and Kenya soon.
