Facebook is set to introduce its own hashtag for group conversations and trending topics or news just like done on Twitter.
Made popular by Twitter, the hashtag is way for people to join into a debate or conversation on Twitter without neccessarily following others or being followed.
According to WSJ, Facebook is working on a Twitter like hashtag to colate conversations or debates on a conversation together so as users stay online longer to see more adds. Facebook’s Instagram already has hashtags to sort photos together.
This development by Facebook might bring in wars against users and ads work on a hashtag is a sign of the heightening battle between Facebook and Twitter, as both compete for mobile users and fight for advertising dollars.Facebook earlier introduced the ”@” sign for tagging brands and celebrities. The sign was an original Twitter tool.
Twitter’s hashtag was introduced more than five years ago and has been used to collect tweets on a trending topics, live events and brands. The hashtag is a source of revenue, reason Facebook is working on its own.
