Today, the Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NIRA) announced the .ng domain name extension, welcomed by firms and individuals in the country albeit the N15000 price tag.
Speaking on the launch of the .ng domain name extensions, Vicky Stilwell, director in the intellectual property department at Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs said: “We believe the .ng domain will become more popular than the .com.ng extension in the near future.”
She added that trademark users of .com.ng should urgently register for the new .ng domain names before another person registers it. She called on international companies doing business country to go ahead and register their domains to avoid any land-grabs.
Several companies had lined up their registration for the second level domain names but NIRA had a number of them that were premium value domain names and only available via auction. Such domains could include government.ng, insurance.ng, among others.
Emphasizing on the significance the new domain names, she said companies considering doing business in Nigeria ought to register their trademarks to avoid third parties grabbing them with intentions of selling at a profit later.
