After-Class.co.za, one of six tech start-ups in Seed Engine’s first business accelerator programme, is a social education network platform which enables learners, teachers and tutors to share collective curriculum based content in an a fun, game-like educational experience.
After-Class.co.za offers learners external motivation to engage with their studies by turning their class work into currency, allowing them to trade material online. Students can earn points, communicate with peers, support one another across school borders and earn tangible rewards for their efforts. Users can find help, notes, past papers and practice tests, or participate in a session with a tutor or chat to fellow learners via chartrooms using both text and video.
Teachers can trade teaching material, notes, testing material and memos with peers. They can also assist students with their queries and use the teacher’s chat room.
It is the only portal that offers game-like elements to education by offering users points for their class work and rewards for supporting peers. After-Class’s revenue is earned through the sale of points required to download notes and material and use the interactive facilities.
The founder of After-Class is Bryan Vlok who comes from a family of high school teachers and was himself once a teacher. He also has a technical background, having worked in the digital and radio media industries in the four years leading up to the conceptualisation and launch of After-Class.
In addition to the initial R100 000 funding from Seed Engine, Vlok has received a software investment valued at R230 000 for his venture to date.
Vlok rates Seed Engine accelerator programme highly: “Seed Engine is a phenomenal opportunity”, he says. “The fact that we have managed to achieve what we have within a short time has been a big advantage and the coaching we have received from Seed Engine has been invaluable; it has enabled us to refine our product, our offering and our market strategy and the foundations we have laid for networking and being in the hub of productivity is unparalleled to any other environment in South Africa. Seed Engine has been our very own engine room.”
Says Marc Elias, CEO of Seed Engine, “Bryan has been completely open to looking at his concept from different perspectives. He has deployed a stakeholder solution, calling on all relevant parties in the education ecosystem to work together to create a sustainable online teaching and sharing environment. After-Class is an awesome approach to solving a global problem. It’s no good presenting a solution to one issue if it’s not solving the entire issue, and After-Class does that. ”
