StarTimes Media, a digital Pay Television provider has launched a new Digital Video Broadcasting Technology 2 (DVB –T2) free to air set top box which allows access to free to air channels without any subscription payments after initial purchase. However, willing customers can pay for international channels on any of the firm bouquets, ranging from Kshs.499 to Kshs.2,499 per month if interested.
The decoder retails at Kshs.4,999, inclusive of one month free access to all 70+ StarTimes international channels.
According to the firm, the new DVB-T2 supports SD, HD and mobile TV and has increased capacity, robustness and the ability to reuse existing reception antennas. The T2-Lite subset for mobile and portable reception.
It uses OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplex) modulation to allow a large number of channels and offers robust signal.
The set top box runs on Multiple Physical Layer Pipes to allow separate adjustment of the robustness of each delivered service within a channel good for both in-door or roof-top antenna also has Alamouti coding, a transmitter diversity method that improves coverage in small-scale single-frequency networks. Its Future Extension Frames (FEF) allows future compatibility adjustments.
It’s currently exclusive to StarTimes customer service centres in Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa, with the option to purchase it from the firm’s online shop, and the promise of free delivery. Also included is a one year warranty and hotline support.
