Giant social network Facebook and micro-blogging site Twitter risk being blocked in Zambia amidst cries from the public.
The sites are sett to be blocked after the Zambia government realized its citizens were using them to assess stories from the Zambian Watchdog and Zambia Reports. The sites are allegedly blocked in Zambia by the government.
According to media reports, President Michael Sata’s parallel intelligence system is is serious on the block. The Zambian Reports adds that the government is also considering to block an internet radio called Crossfire Blogtalk Radio for being critical to President Michael Sata’s Patriotic Front government.
The government is now studying how block the social sites from Zambians who turn to Facebook pages and Twitter accounts of this media houses for news. The Zambian Reports claims that the government has sent a delegation to Russia on the move ahead of the 2016 general elections.
Though the alleged blocking of the social sites might not work out as planned, any government that frustrates people’s rights to free speech is not democratic.
