Upstart Africa, has announced auditions for its televised start-up accelerator shows expected to bring together young aspiring techpreneurs from across the country to pitch their ideas to a nationwide audience and win $50,000 in seed investment.
The teams of developers, creatives and business development managers will be divided into 8 teams of 5 and will be competing to develop commercially viable and socially impactful innovations for a period of 13 weeks with professional support, capacity building training, and leadership skills from the various mentors and investors.
Founded by Ole Kenga and Kelly Church, Upstart Africa aims to bring the “cool and fun factor” into technology and entrepreneurship and influence the youth to take up technology and entrepreneurship, inspir them to innovate than be job seekers.
Kenga told TechMoran, “We have received 100 applications to date. Our first auditions will be held in Kisumu on September 20 and 21st. Our next auditions will be in Eldoret, then Mombasa. The grand finale will be held in Nairobi.”

Glad that top mentors and venture capitalists have joined the team Kenga said he expects the event to help sign up more youth into technology to solve local problems.

He added, “We want to train them on ideation, sales and marketing and how they can set up companies. We want to the youth to take up opportunities that abound around them instead of waiting for jobs or the government to help them.
Upstart Africa is an opportunity for the youths to get mentorship from professions in business development, marketing and product design. It aims at supporting youth to start companies and become competitive across the continent.

dreams and win $50,000 along the way. They will also get a local pool of investors and international venture capitalists to to invest in the best businesses after the competition.
Like big brother, one team will be voted out of the show every week by the show’s panel of judges. The judges will identify teams with working prototype and make sure their solutions are in check with the world problems.
The 40 contestants will be based in Nairobi and the show will be live on TV for the whole period to allow viewers to vote in their best candidates every week and vote out those not impressive. Each team on the show will get $5,000 worth of
investment, exposure to venture capitalists and nine months free working space at UpStart Africa offices with access to mentors, VCs, investors and strategic partnerships.
