We all know that our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if one day it just stopped working? Well in this series, one day, like a switch turned off, the world is suddenly plunged back into the dark ages. Planes fell from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication became impossible. And without any modern technology, no one could tell them why. Now, 15 years later, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet small communities, and when the sun goes down lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it?

On the borders of small farming communities, danger lurks. A young woman’s life is dramatically changed when the local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously had something to do with the blackout. They capture her brother and this brutal encounter sets her and two unlikely companions off on a daring journey to find answers about the past in the hopes of reclaiming the future.

Now in its second season, it’s more intense and keeps you wanting more at the end of each episode. JJ Abrams is a brilliant producer having accolades for Star Trek, Lost, Fringe, and Super 8, just to mention a few. Though there are times you watch this series and you are like, ‘please someone shut up that sobbing girl’!!! The show states that even batteries and motors will not work, I can see how one could create a world without electrical power but to completely stop the functionality of batteries takes the work of some black magic. Now unless they incorporate Gandalf into the story line I do not see this as a practical scenario but that’s the beauty of imagination.

If you are looking for reality in a TV series, then this is not for you. The drama it provides, apart from the sobbing protagonist, is worth it and you are drawn each week. I would give this series a rating of 6 stars out 10 because it really hasn’t gone under my skin. At first when I watched the first 2 episodes, I thought it sucked, but then I continued and the reality is it gets you thinking, ‘this can happen and this can’t happen in real life, but if it does happen am I really prepared? What would I do if we went back to the dark ages?’ So I say again, give this show a go, you might just like it…
