REVIEW: The NEXUS 7, Second Edition

 nexus7

Design

The very first thing I noticed on the, 2012 launched, Nexus 7 second edition is the size. It has a 7 inch screen that is quite comfortable to hold and you can type your way with both you thumbs while gripping it on both sides without having to struggle; (that’s a yey! for me). Another thing is that the tablet is small enough to fit in almost anything and being a lady size matters because the tablet has to fit in my bag plus other staff that have to be there, easy to see it as a phablet.

The simplicity of this device is what would catch anyone’s attention apart from being incredibly light as it weighs only 299g with a thickness (or should I say thinness) of only 8.7mm. The back of the tablet is made of plastic and its edges are curvy unlike the first edition of the nexus 7.

I commend the positioning of the power buttons, as they are neatly tucked under the curve maintaining the sleek look as well as avoiding ‘accidental switching off the device’. You will not miss the microUSB charging pot as it is just at the bottom.

The screen

With 1920 x 1200 pixels as per the specs, the nexus 7, screen is crisp clear and very sharp, even when viewing it at an angle. So thinking of watching a movie on this device? Go ahead, in fact ditch you TV as there no disappointments on the picture clarity.

Speakers

This device has two speakers, at the top and at the bottom and are both, well except when you hold the tablet horizontally you will cover them.

Camera

For 5MP snapper with auto-focus, I must say the camera needs a lot of improvement as the picture quality is not as good; I would rely on my phone as the photos composition tends to look a bit blurry. The tablet has no flash and one can also use the volume button to take photos. If one could watch HD videos then go take photos one would think they were two different devices. We however, thank the Google app store for it can get something to edit them.

The videos on the other hand are good if your hand is steady enough and I couldn’t help but note the shakiness of the images in the video especially when the lighting changes.

It also has a front facing camera that is 1.2MP.

This is what it’s all about

Making the processing speed and connectivity, of this device a breath of fresh air as it is very quick respond to any Wi-Fi connection. With the chrome browser pre-installed you will get your work going in no time, even when opening about five windows.

This gadget runs of Android Jelly Bean (4.3) has made the Google store quite active and one can find almost anything for everything needed. It has a multiple user platform, so you can save and log out and someone else will login with their own user info.

The device comes with the Jelly bean but can be upgraded to the KitKat (4.4)

With the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4Pro running at 1.5GHz with Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM the only thing that will stop you from playing those games is if your battery runs low, even on the most rigorous games.

You will not be able to expand you memory in the nexus 7 second edition because the device has no memory card slot, so you are stuck with the 16GB or 32GB  storage you choose to purchase.

The device does not have infrared but has a Bluetooth, GPS, NFC and you get a dual-band 802.11n

Battery life

Specs of the device say that the 3,950 mAh battery is supposed last up to nine hours with active use; and this is basically little of everything.

For the gamers I would give it a max of 6-6.5 hours

Verdict

The downfall of this gadget is that we cannot expand its memory, with people doing more than a thousand things on the move I think Google should consider including this in their next tablet.

Google should also work on improving the camera, for a 5MP auto focus camera the output is rather disappointing plus there is no camera flash, I think we need the camera flash.

For only Ksh. 25,000 ($288) the Nexus 7 second edition should be in every pocket or bag in any settings, as it is far much better than the first edition. The crisp clear screen, high performance and good enough battery life and only two things to complain about, this gadget is what you could be looking for.
