Leading mobile subscriber Safaricom has set off installation of Wireless Internet Service in selected shopping malls within Nairobi, Nakuru Mombasa and Kisumu as a strategy for cutting reliance on its voice revenue.

The service widely enjoyed by commuters within the capital will now be extended to commercial buildings with a target to deploy 770 kilometres fibre optic cable network and upgrading its speeds to 42mbps.

Safaricom has already established 650 kilometres of the fibre optic cable and hooked 100 commercial buildings in Nairobi to its optic fibre also eying contracts from government and Small Medium Enterprises with its fixed line, website hosting, managed email and payroll services through cloud computing.

This however calls for competition since Telkom Kenya is also targeting county governments and learning institutions with the service not forgetting Google which has partnered Wananchi group to offer the same.
