Rwanda’s Craiglist Raising Funds to Build an SMS platform

Launched on November 11th, 2011 by twins Chance Tubane and Patience Nduwawe, Tohoza.com is raising cash on Indiegogo to launch an SMS platform and reach more users in the country.

“This is why we need your support to help us funding the expansion of Tohoza.com services to the mobile. ‘TOHOZA Info’ will enable any mobile phone holder to share and access useful information about Job, Houses/Cars for rent/sale, etc.) using our platform. This will allow Tohoza.com to have a bigger impact and serve all Rwandans without any exception through affordable access to practical information with economic and social development impact,” the say.

tohozaNow with over 10,000 unique visits/day with almost 15,000 Facebook Fans, Tohoza has become Rwanda’s top classifieds ad site with property listings, auto ads, jobs and just about everything and Patience and Chance who were reunited after 9 long years aim to reach more users than just those on the web.

Tohoza wants to reach to SMS users too, who comprise of the majority of mobile users in the country. Only 12% of Rwandans can use internet now and Tohoza.com, Rwandan equivalent of Craigslist want to serve 53% more using mobile phones without Internet Access.

The two co-founders will use the cash to fire more staff, get an office and buy IT equipment. They are at the moment, the number one Rwandan website in terms of Job Announcements and they also provide offline free coaching sessions to prepare new and future graduates for the labor market.

In April  this year, they started a program to empower youth by giving them the opportunity to get practical experience by offering them 6 months volunteer positions and currently have over 200 Tohoza Volunteers working with them. The raise aim to help them reach more companies and businesses to promote their products and services online.
