We are deeply sorry to announce that Carey Eaton, co-founder and CEO of One Africa Media has passed away. Carey was reportedly shot dead by thugs in Nairobi in the early hours of this morning. Eaton, 41, was shot dead by thugs at a friends home. The gang took away cash and other valuables. Carey succumbed to the injuries while at hospital.
Carey was a close friend to the TechMoran team and was one of the people we went to when wanted to do something new. He gave us insights, gave us the courage and he was more of a father figure to us and not just a mentor. He was intelligent and bold and down-to-earth and we turned to him as a friend, a brother and family; but it’s not just us here at TechMoran who have lost, Carey leaves behind his wife and kids and the entire OAM family too.
One Africa Media runs Cheki Africa, BrighterMonday, BuyRentKenya and StayNow in Kenya, as well as Jobberman in Nigeria, Cheki in Nigeria and Ghana and PrivateProperty in both Nigeria and SafariNow in South Africa. Carey will be dearly missed by TechMoran and by the OAM family but even more so by his own wife and kids.
Carey came back home in 2011 to start Cheki after a lucrative career in Autralia as the CIO of the Australian classified group SEEK. who are also investors in One Africa Media. Carey grew Cheki into Kenya’s number one car portal from scratch to over 150 people spread across the country and into a top classifieds site in Africa.
One Africa Media in a statement say what can never be taken away is the legacy around them in the team and the brands that he built. “When we have mourned the loss of our friend we will, with renewed resolve, get back to building his vision into a great legacy. In celebration of his life.”
