Ghana addresses juvenile justice via mobile phones

Youth Bridge foundation (YBF), a Ghanaian civil society organization, launched an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and Short Messaging System (SMS) platform on Tuesday at a stakeholder’s forum in Accra.

YBF’s IVR and SMS are intended to raise the awareness on the rights and responsibilities of the youth, expand the scope of legal education, and simplify legal processes.

YBF’s program manager Mr. Douglas Quortey said that the organization considers awareness of the fundamental human right and access to justice by the youth as vital for national development. He further stated that the platform would assist the youth to attain their full potential.

According to Quortey, the Juvenile Justice Act 653 and the Children’s Act 506 are now accessible via an interactive voice response platform and text message.

YBF is a focused youth organization established to create supportive platforms that challenge the youth’s creativity as well as make critical information and resources available.

According to YBF’s official website, the objective of the foundation is to support the growth of an environment that gets the most out of the youth’s potential as well as support the transition of young people into responsible adults.

YBF’s deputy director of social welfare Mrs. Comfort Asare commended the project and remarked that lack of information on justice has made it difficult for young people to fight for their rights.
