CEO Weekends: Internet Ventures Congo Wants to be Central Africa’s Rocket Internet

10424997_711709955531792_6903738939701212719_nDRC’s JobWangu is using the power of the Internet to simplify the process of finding jobs online, buying stuff and finding love online and has as many ventures as the (in) famous Rocke Internet.

According to Steve Nkashama, CEO Internet Ventures Congo, “Finding a job has always been a challenge, especially when there is no real dedicated Internet Jobs Portal. All that has changed thanks to the release of JobWangu.com, DRC’s latest Jobs Portal. This is the first site in the DRC where job hunters can post their CV’s online, and companies can post job descriptions to attract applicants. The country’s labor market is badly out of balance. Demographic pressures mean that the demand for jobs is rapidly increasing while since 1990 supply has been falling steeply. This state of affairs has favored the emergence of the informal sector.”

About 80% of the active population operates outside the labor market and the unemployment rate is for now about 73%. Young people face huge problems in finding work. Given the limited number of jobs on offer, the mismatch between training and the skills sought by employers, and the slow rate of retirement among public employees, more than 70% of the young are jobless. Those hardest hit are young people aged between 15 and 24 living in towns and cities. Connections play a major role in finding a job in the DRC. Of the 9,000 young people leaving Congolese universities each year, fewer than 100 find a job.

JobWangu seems to be the answer to the problem of being able to centralize all job offerings, and for job seekers to post their CV’s. For the first time, everything is presented in a well-organized and up-to-date platform. JobWangu has the ambition to become an indispensable tool and a reference on the Congolese job market. Other job markets have benefitted by this type of jobs platform because it empowers people from all strata of society on an equal level.

The site has built-in filters, covering locations, such as: Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Goma, Mbuji-Mayi, Kisangani, Masina, Kananga, Likasi, Kolwezi, and Tshikapa. Over 34 employment sectors are included. JobWangu.com belongs to the Group Internet Ventures Congo, Congolese Law Society registered in the Registry of Commerce and Companies of Kinshasa. Launched in 2014, by three young thirty-somethings sorts of a solid international experience (DR Congo, France, Belgium, Australia) in Internet startups, in advertising and events. Our goal is to develop web services in the DRC and Kinshasa, and will soon be launching: carwangu.com, immowangu.com, foodwangu.com, hoteleangu.com and lovewangu.com.
