Mobile operators MTN and Orange together with the government of Cameroon have launched a new mobile tax service to help millions of taxpayers in the country to pay their property taxes via mobile money.

With 20 million people the government estimates the total worth of property tax collection is $16 million, as tax evasion has been a big problem; and with a huge segment of the population unbanked, the new mobile money service is part of a move to increase internal revenue from property tax.

To effect this  taxpayers must open an Orange Money account or MTN Mobile Money account before they can be able use the service. the account will be stored in the state tax department via the MTN  and Orange mobile database.

The first phase, Mobile tax will be exclusively reserved for property tax on real estate properties for landowners who own property in Yaonde and Douala; while in the second phase entails expanding the range of solutions of tax payment with MTN and Orange partners
