Omate in smartwatch partnership with VMK in Africa

OMATEThe first smartwatch made in Africa: the crossover model Omate Racer x VMK limited edition will be assembled in the factory of VMK in Brazzaville – Republic of Congo tahnks to a partnership between Omate and  with VMK – one of the fastest telecom companies operating in Africa.

The crossover model will be assembled locally in the factory of VMK in Brazzaville from May 2015.

“We are delighted to bring our expertise to offer affordable smartwatches in Africa. Omate’s mission is to connect the World through a wearable experience and this strategic partnership with VMK is another manifestation of our commitment.” Says Laurent Le Pen, CEO at Omate.

After months of R&D with Omate, we will offer African customers a product with a fashionable look and comfortable to wear every day.” Says Vérone Mankou, Founder and CEO at VMK.

The Omate Racer x VMK limited edition pushes notifications from iOS and Android, sports a 1.22” transflective “always-on” display and is powered by a MediaTek Aster – MT2502 – the smallest wearable System on Chip currently on the market powered by an ARM ARM7EJ-S™ RISC processor.

The companion smartwatch pushes notifications via Bluetooth Low Energy from iOS7 or newer and Android 4.3 or never like the VMK Elikia L smartphone through the Omate Android app available on the Google Play Store. Powerful enough to last up to 5 days in standby time, the Omate Racer x VMK runs LinkIt™ the development platform for Wearables by MediaTek Labs.

It supports over-the-air (OTA) updates for apps, algorithms and drivers which enable “push and install” software stack from the smartphone app to the smartwatch. The Omate Racer x VMK will be available at 89,000 CDF (US$99) from June 2015 via the VMK distribution channels in Africa including a first batch of “Limited Edition”.
