Reviewing the 2015 Tikon Car Tracker from Concept Nova in Nigeria

The importance of keeping our cars safe has continued to rise, with different methods from round the clock security guard monitoring to on the clock camera surveillance being employed by private and business car owners. While these methods have proven successful for a certain period and within a certain radius, none has proven as successful as installing a GPS car tracking unit.

There are so many reasons to get a car tracking device for a vehicle. For the private car owner, it ensures that you know where your car is at all times and ensures that elderly or younger members of the family are safe while using the car. For the business owner, it helps keep tabs on employees or in tracking a fleet of cars managed by the company.

A question I had while carrying out my car tracker research is, if this trackers are so important, then why do many Nigerians or Africans not install it in their cars. Three major answers came up;

i. Fear of fake trackers

ii. Exorbitant price of car trackers

iii. Lack of knowledge about car trackers.

This three answers which formed the bulk of answers from the people I surveyed are the major reasons why a technology that exists to reduce car theft and ensure family safety has not achieved wide spread adoption by the mass market.

Going further in my research, I discovered a newly manufactured car tracker device that at first interaction was able to solve two of the problems above; quality and price. The tracker, the Tikon GPS Car Tracker by Concept Nova retailed on Konga.com was going at a price of 29k and with free installation for certain areas or a guided installation for certain locations in Nigeria.

I got one of the car trackers myself and decided to go through the installation process with one of the Concept Nova installers as a guide.

How Car Tracking Devices Work

Car tracking devices or car trackers as they are called are really simple yet powerful devices that use GPS or Global Positioning System transmitter, as well as cellular technology, to monitor the location of a vehicle at all times. These trackers use a network of satellites orbiting the world and receive information from these satellites which help them pin point the location of a vehicle through a process called “trilateration”.  For a car tracking system to work, the company that sells/manages(Concept Nova in this case) them will have to have a monitoring center where they get signals about the location of the tracker.

PROS of the Tikon Car Tracker

i. Cost: The going cost of the Tikon device is at N29,999 (as at the time of writing this post), and doesn’t have the usual monthly maintenance fees associated with other trackers.

ii. Easy to Install: The device box from Concept Nova comes with everything needed to install the device.

iii. Long lasting battery: The device is wired to the power source if the car which ensures it is charged plus the battery lasts for days even when the charging source fails.

iv. Unique features: The Tikon device can work with computer tracking capabilities but also has an active Sim card which enables it use an SMS plan to monitor the car’s whereabouts. The device is also very small-3 x 0.6 x 1.8 inches—so it can be installed easily and hidden discreetly in any vehicle. This system tracks and alerts for all the basic features that that one would want in a monitoring tool, such as high speed, location, direction, battery-life remaining, and crossing of geo-fences—virtual boundaries set by the user. Furthermore, assuming the driver is aware of the device, it can be used to send an S.O.S in the event of an emergency. By pushing a button, up to 3 pre-programmed numbers will automatically receive necessary information to help. Overall, this is a high functioning, basic and convenient tracker sufficient for family and individual use.

v. Great support: The Concept Nova team has a monitoring centre that provides 24 hours support ensuring that the car is well monitored at all times.
