Rarely do we like any phone that first but the Tecno BOOM J7 is that impressive. Anyone who loves music like my young sister wouldn’t want anyone else to use the monster-loud boom smartphone and she took it-just because of its music.
The packaging is awesome and talks music. With just the brand name Tecno Mobile at the top edge and a huge IT’S BOOM TIME and guitars and music symbols alloever, anyone would know what the phone is all for. So the first few minutes we have it, we play music and instead of using a sub-woofer we play music directly from the phone and it’s real Boom Time!
Apart from the great hardware for both its internal music and the metallic headsets, the phone also comes in great colours even though its plastic all-round.
Inside the box, there’s the phone itself, a travellers charger and USB cable, two free covers, headsets and of course the instruction manual and warranty.
The two free covers we got were blue and brown or something close to dark grey engrained with music designs and symbols allover as you can see in the photos below. We don’t know what other colours the covers come in but we think it’s something the phone manufacturer wants to use to attract bright colour lovers as well as help buyers ways to give the phone protection minus having to spend an extra coin.
The packing is awesome and so is the price. The Tecno Boom J7 runs on Android Kitkat, has a 2MP camera in front and an 8MP camera at the back. It’s 5 inches and runs on a 1GB RAM and an internal storage of 16GB which you can extend to 32GB via its expansion slot.
Its 1.3ghz quadcore processor is great to run most of the apps pre-installed on the phone. It’s 2020mAh Battery is just enough for 8 hours of heavy duty music and bits of data and WiFi use. The phone is just Ksh 12,999 and we think that’s just affordable for majority of the music-loving youth.
Kenyan youth use more than one mobile provider. One for mobile money or data and another for voice and SMS. Tecno Boom J7 sorts that with its Dual SIM capabilities. Users can run both a Normal and a Micro SIM for flexibility. The device comes with a 12month plus one warranty.
Just next to that is an expansion slot of up to 32GB for all your music and audio files on the go. As you can see, Tecno Boom J7 comes with a replaceable battery and you can buy a second one if you want so you double your phone output minus worrying but its battry is strong and on full charge it might take you a whole day minus looking for a charger again.
At the bottom edge, you can see what makes the phone so loved by the youth. The internal speaker is as huge as a normal FM radio’s. That’s why it’s a BOOM J7 anyway.
Next to that speaker there’s a charging slot on the bottom edge which makes handling the phone easier and you can use it even as you charge it.
On the other side you’ll see a huge camera and a flash lens next to it. Below the flash on the back cover is the TECNO logo. With this new phone. Tecno is playing with sound, size and colour-seems someone told the firm that music is everything for the 20’s youth who buy more than 3 devices in a year.
We love that the phone’s charging is on below it unlke some of models we have come across that have the charging port on the top edge. User experience comes alive especially it being a music phone. You can plug in the metallic red earphones, rock your music as well as have the phone on charge for more juice and even be able to ake photos without interfering with the charging port.
As you can see the main camera is huge and protruding. The 8MP main camera at the back comes with a flash and also has a 2MP brother on the front. On our test, the camera is fast and we don’t notice any lag while taking photos and the little shakes can go unnoticed and therefore few blurred images.
The front camera at 2MP is not as clear as its rear friend but nevertheless perfoms. In good light, the front camera also has some crisp clear images. Both camera’s have zoom capability unless you use them via some thrid party apps on the phone. We couldn’t zoom ii on Twitter.
Coming home to its home screen.
This beast is sleek and greatly designed for the millenial music loving youth. It’s 5 inch display screen is HD and has resolutions to the range of 720×1080 display and a 320 dpi-great for movies, reading, video and gaming. The edges are well crafted for handling as you can see the image below.
At the bottom you can see three red buttons. The middle huge one is the home button. The one on the left is the menu button and the one on the right is the back button. This thing also comes. Camera ready as you can see at the bottom. As we said, the phone’s primary camera is 8MP and can take up to 2448 x 3264-pixel pictures, in HDR. It has autofocus and allows geo-tagging and as well has a LED flash. It can take videos of up to 1080p at 30fps. The camera is front is just 2MP and can take up to 1600 x 1200-pixel pictures.
What have we forgotten. On the buttom left as shown below is the power port.
And on the top left as shown below is the headphone jack. Ready to energize whichever speaker system you have at home or in the office. The hardware is so ready for music.
And then below comes the mettalic headsets for any music head out there and the pack is classy too. Who even does that in this smartphone market and for that price?
We are yet to taste how decibles this beasy can run but just listening to it reminds us of an office home theather system. This thing amplifies the user’s ears like they were listening to a full surround system.
Everything else wil come in the review.
Some of the preloaded apps include of course Gmail and its realted services like Gtalk, Google Now, Youtube and others such as Flash Share, Facebook and Palmchat and the Boom Player App.
Because the Boom J7 is a music phone, we want you to try the Boom Player App, which allows you to stream or download your own tracks and put them on the hardware which has been built specically for music.
With the phones speakers and headsets amplified for music, its musical power doesn’t drain its functionality. The hardware and the software are durable. We haven’t played games on it and yet to establish if there’s any lags in the processor.
