Interactive media studio with bases in Ghana and Kenya Leti Arts, has released a pilot issue of its popular comic Ananse: The Origin on Amazon’s comiXology, putting it into ranks with comic legends including Batman, Spiderman and Superman and as well making it the first African published comics to be featured on comiXology.
ComiXology is an Amazon.com, Inc. subsidiary delivering a cloud-based digital platform that simplifies discovering, buying, and reading comics and is based in New York with offices in Los Angeles and Paris.
According to Eyram Tawia, CEO of Leti Arts and winner of the British Council Young Creative Entrepreneurs Media Awards, “The goal of merging the past with the present in a format that is exciting and compelling is to encourage audiences to be genuinely excited about African history and culture. To have Ananse: The Origin available on comiXology is a major accomplishment for us and will provide a platform for one of the first true African superheroes to be introduced to comic fans around the world.”
Ananse: The Origin features Kweku Ananse, the African folklore character from Ghana known for his skill of trickery and cunning. Leti Arts reimagines the story of Ananse as a superhero fighting crime in present day Africa. In the pilot issue, Ananse, the spider god, seeks prominence in the Sky Kingdom to ultimately become the God of Wisdom.
