Finnish developer of open mobile OS Sailfish OS, Jolla has announced it is set to build a Sailfish OS ecosystem in Africa starting from South Africa.
This comes just a week after the firm announced a Sailfish OS based mobile ecosystem to Russia. Jolla’s Sailfish Africa will work with Cell-C co-founder Dr. Sello Rathete. After South Africa, Sailfish Africa will be expanded into other African countries.
The consortium will create the Sailfish Africa ecosystem together with local powerhouses from e-commerce, digital media and mobile.
Founded in 2011 Sailfish OS is an open source Linux developed specifically for mobile and runs o the Jolla Smartphone and Jolla Tablet which are designed and developed in Finland. The Jolla Tablets are set to hit the markets in H2/2015.
Praised for its viable independent mobile ecosystem, Sailfish OS will be helpful as businesses in Africa move mobile and it is essential for African economies to start developing their own independent ecosystems for mobile.
“It does not make sense that all the businesses in mobile are taxed by US companies, and we also need to have a platform where we can freely develop our own solutions for e-Commerce, mobile banking and e-Learning. That is what Sailfish OS offers to Africa,” said Dr. Sello Rathete.
Though Jolla wants to build a customised OS for Africa, it’s not the only doing so. Firefox OS for mobile is launching so fast across Africa and Ubuntu is also getting more mobile and desktop devices to use its OS.
