GOtv has secretly introduced an annual fee on all its FTA subscribers by repacking FTA channels under a new bouquet dubbed GOtv Lite.
According to GOtv’s Internal Guide dated May 18, 2015, GOtv says its taking subscribers on a new and exciting journey with a refreshed brand positioning that will reaffirm the brand as a leader in digital television entertainment and as the most affordable and trusted digital migration partner.
However, the words mean the opposite. The firm says beginning 18 May 2015, it would be rebranding the GOtv bouquets with a few variations to some while others remain unchanged. The firm’s original GOtv bouquet which offers over 21 channels ranging from news and documentaries, lifestyle, music, religion and sport, will be renamed to GOtv Value.
“GOtv Plus which provides over 40 channels of great family entertainment will remain unchanged. A new offering called GOtv Lite replaces Gotv open and will give access to free-to-air and 2 additional pay TV channels. GOtv Lite a new bouquet which will essentially replace GOtv Open and consist of the Faith and Islam channels plus all FTA white listed channels,” the firm added.
GOtv Lite has all the White Listed Free View Channels + Islam & Faith religious channels and replaces Gotv open and the new basic bouquet offering with an annual Admin Fee launched by GOtv even though subscribers will not be required to pay monthly fees on the Gotv Lite bouquet.
“For Ksh. 1800, subscribers will have access to the FAITH and Islam channels plus all available local free television channels. Changes in operating systems and bouquet configurations has necessitated the introduction of GOtv Lite, which has replaced the current GOtv Open,” the firm announced.
GOtv defends itself saying its not charging subscribers but the annual administration fee is for the network management costs that are incurred by GOtv to bring the channels to them. The firm adds that active GOtv Open subscribers are currently not affected by the introduction of GOtv Lite but this is not the case with some subscribers who are expressing their anger on social media as they are not happy with this new development.
