Facebook launches Facebook Lite | Takes Internet.org to Senegal

facebook-liteFacebook has launched Facebook Lite, a new version of Facebook for Android that uses less data and works well across all network conditions.

Facebook Lite is targeted at users in emerging markets where bandwidth is either low or expensive and is less than 1MB, fast to install and quick to load and has all Facebook’s core experiences like News Feed, status updates, photos, notifications and more. Facebook Lite is being rolled out across Asia, and will be launched in Latin America, Africa and Europe in the coming weeks.

Facebook also today launched its Internet.org in Senegal, making it the sixth country in Africa to have the app. The firm is working with Tigo Senegal to take Internet access to the masses in its move to reach the two thirds of the world who are not online.

Some of the apps Internet.org users in Senegal will acess for free include AccuWeather, BabyCenter & MAMA, BBC News, BING, UNICEF, Ebola Info, Facebook, UNICED Facts for Life, Girl Effect by Nike Foundation, Malaria No More, Messenger, Wattpad, Wikipedia, Wiwisport, Dakaractu.com, Senjob.
The firm also introduced alocation sharing feature to allow users send a map of theirlocation or another particular place as a separate message to their friends. Users can send alocation when they tap on thelocation pin and then choose to send it as a separate message. One can also share a location—like a meeting spot—even if they’re not there.
