Royalty King is a new android app which allows users to view targeted ads on their smartphones and pays gifts to users to encourage loyalty. By downloading the app, users are sure of earning bonuses everytime they watch or listen to an ad.
With over 50 promotions, Elvis Bando the Co-Founder and CTO of Mobiad Services which runs Royalty King says we haven’t seen anything yet. Royalty King’s main goal is to change the way coporate firms reach out to clients on mobile.
Bando told TechMoran, “Advertising is as important to the viewer as it is important to the advertiser. This is especially so when the advert is relevant and timely. Most mobile adverts in Kenya are mostly distributed by international companies which lead to mostly irrelevant ads. We wanted to change this by distributing relevant ads.”
According to Bando, the main challenge to everyone serving ads is no one likes to view ads and in most cases, the percentage of irrelevant ads is almost always higher because of the barage of ads people view everyday.
“I can personally count the number of times I have seen a full length YouTube ads. So we decided that while the aim is to send relevant ads to our users, we will also ‘easen’ the pain of having to watch irrelevant ads,” Bando said. “So in a sense, Royalty King was launched in response to the need of serving relevant information/ads to users and at the same time allowing advertisers to target specific audiences.”
The app works simply, after downloading the Royalty King app, every call a user receives exposes them to a banner ad that pops up on their call screen. When the call ends, an interaction page pops up. They can interact with the ad/information by clicking on a link, sharing, or blocking(muting) it. Every time they see these ads counts towards redeemable points. Once they get to 10 points, they can start redeeming the points for airtime, and if they accumulate more, they get other promotions like shopping vouchers. Each point is worth KES 2.
Bando says the app currently has over 42,000 users after 3 months of TV, Radio and Newspaper activations with Standard Group,an exclusive partner to the project. The partners share the advertiser’s ad spend between them and the users as royalties to keep them using the app and as well interact with it.
