Facebook Messenger hits 1billion monthly active users

Facebook Messenger has announced that more than 1 billion people now use Messenger as their platform every month.

“We’re grateful for all the people who are sending billions of messages every day and we hope to send 1 billion thank yous in the form of a new floating balloon gift that everyone can use to celebrate. Just send a balloon emoji to your friends to add a touch of whimsy and delight to any conversation.

We know that every message is important to you — no matter what you want to say — and our team is committed to building experiences you love and for making all the interactions in your life easier no matter who you are communicating with.” Facebook wrote on their blog.

According to Facebook, people use Facebook Messenger to connect with the people and businesses they care most about. They make plans, share dreams, send payments, tell jokes, play games, let their loved ones know they’re thinking of them and much, much more.

The 1billion mark is a huge milestone for the network that the world must take note of because of the initial backlash of Facebook splitting Messenger off from its flagship app in 2014. When the social network removed chatting capabilities from the Facebook app, users went on a rant. For Facebook, it was the only way of allowing Facebook users to use the Facebook Messenger as a standalone app.

Facebook was the first social network to surpass 1 billion registered accounts and currently sits at 1.59 billion monthly active users. Eighth-ranked photo-sharing app Instagram had over 400 million monthly active accounts. Meanwhile, blogging service Tumblr had more than 555 million active blog users on their site.
