It’s taken us long to do this review because we wanted to get the best out of it and enjoy its selfie camera for a little while. TECNO Camon C9 is TECNO’s first dual 13.0MP low-light cameras and is targeted at the growing demand for camera phones in the market for photo and fashion lovers. Targeted at the mid-budget camera or selfie phone is powered by TECNO’s new UI HiOS V1.0, running on top of Google’s Android Marshmallow 6.0 OS. It follows TECNO’s Camon C5and C8 and also has eye scanner technology for the phone’s and apps’security, and is powered by MediaTek MT6735 octa-core processor running on a 2GB RAM.
The version we have is Sandstone black and has a 5.5 inch display screen with a a screen resolution of 1080 by 1920 pixels. On the back, the sandstone cover is the 13MP main camera with a LED Flash below it. There is a TECNO logo beneath the flash and at the bottom is the Camon brand name and the phone’s speaker at the bottom. On the phone’s front display screen, is a menu button in between the recent and back keys on the left and right respectively. Away from the physical resemblance, the phone’s design is averagely good and is a bit sleeker than the Camon C8 and little similar to TECNO Boom J8, the brand’s flagship music phone.
Price, Specs and Performance
At Ksh 18,000, for a phone with a 1.3GHz Octa-core Processor, 13MP front and main cameras running on a 2GB RAM and a 3000mAh battery, TECNO Camon C9, is a targeted at the youthful market segment. It’s Octa-core processor is powerful enough to allow for various process to run in the background and its 2GB RAM makes the processes comfortably stable minus no noticeable lag. The entire time we had we didn’t have to restart it for anything. The only problem was the Iris scanner is a bit slow and becomes anyone to unlock your phone with it if you are in a hurry, but why should you use an Iris Scanner or Eye print verification as some call it which doesn’t even work in darkness?
The 3000mAH battery is not the best, it goes out in just five hours on data or Wi-Fi and heavy media consumption says music, videos, photos and heavy app use. On voice alone, the battery is strong and can go for 8 hours or even more depending on usage. It’s sad that such a beautiful phone (under the price range) can have such a weak battery. Camon C9 has only three sensors, TECNO needs to know that a smartphone needs more than the motion or the G-sensor, the light Sensor and the proximity sensor.
HiOS is good and powers up the phone beautifully but most people are not used to there is that feeling of wanting TECNO to give yo back the full Android experience you are used to.
Of course being a camera phone, Camon C9 is the best phone for selfie and photo lovers. It’s camera’s are good in both low light and darkness and we’ll do a separate camera review later. With all this cameras, the 16 GB storage will easily run out but the good thing is one can expand their storage with a Micro SD of up to 128GB
Overall, the phone is good and we expect it to be TECNO’s best selling device in Kenya this year. It has a great voice quality, great sound and speaker system both voice, audio and video. Great camera for both photo and video and though it has no fast charging capabilities, it is worth the Ksh 18,000.
For the next Camon version, we recommend TECNO to kill the Iris scanner or Eye print verification to use fingerprint verification on the allover the phone so that anyone who touches your device will have their fingerprints scanned and send to your email on spot. We recommend a better battery and fit it with a 3GB or 4GB RAM and a 32 GB internal storage. TECNO also ought to partner with cloud storage firms such as Dropbox to give their customers free 50GB on purchase or even more.
