:You might wonder why each day a new taxi hailing firm is launching in Kenya but Taxi Chap Chap
is coming on the scene with a different game plan unlike a company with a similar name that never launched after announcing more than two years ago
. Taxi Chap Chap, took six months to study the market and pilot its app among a few users before its public launch today.
According to Channel Manager Taxi Chap Chap, Mr. Sriram S. Iyer, “Our commitment is to provide relentless service to our customers through innovation. We believe in the philosophy that the Customer is the king!” He also added that the company was developing unique security measures to ensure that customers would enjoy the benefit of smooth, calm and stress free transportation in Nairobi.
Taxi Chap Chap mobile app is launching in a market already dominated with firms such as Uber, Mondo Rides, MaraMoja
, Little and the recently launched Taxify
which is an open platform to all the old taxi cabs left out by Uber and Little. Recently, Uber lowered its fares by 35%
to have a competitive edge over Safaricom-backed Little.
To have a wider reach, Little recently unveiled USSD
hailing touted as a move to help it spread to areas where smartphones users may not be available. Taxi Chap Chap faces an uphill task to garner interest and sign up users in the market and might need to do more than just promising a bonus offer for two lucky winners to fly free to Dubai if they download the app between 1st
The biggest task is hiring drivers to the system, as most of this on-demand services have a network effect where the more the drivers the more likely someone will hail them something Uber , Mondo and Little are trying to do by luring driver partners with more rides and other incentives.
Taxi Chap Chap says it has a customer a loyalty program – CabMiles to allow its customers accumulate points for every kilometer travelled which can later be redeemed and used for their rides or as cash. If it a survives this year, Taxi Chap Chap will spread to other towns from its base in Nairobi, then later launching across East Africa.
Update: The first version of this story mention Chap Chap taxi as related to Taxi Chap Chap which launched today. A spokesperson of the company has since clarified that. Taxi Chap Chap is a new company and is not related to the defunct Chap Chap Taxi which announced it will launch two years ago. We highly apologize for any inconveniences caused.
