Tablet And Phone Games Can Help Diagnose Autism

autisticOver the years many clinical professionals have tried to understand the well-known complex condition known as autism. Through different thorough assessments diagnoses have been made but there is still so much more to do. Researchers from the   University of Strathclyde have managed to use games on a tablet to track a person’s hand movement.  The unique study has proven that technology can help doctors diagnose autism in a less intrusive manner. The best thing about this new development is the fact that suspected autistic children can avoid stressful and costly tests by clinicians.

Unfortunately at times detecting autism can be a challenge which is strenuous on the parents. When autism is detected from an early age it makes it easier for the children to access a range of support services. Although using phone games may take a bit longer for the clinicians to detect autism this new way is by far cheaper, faster and more intriguing for the child as well. Unlike other instruments used when validating autism this new method has nothing to do with social, emotional or cognitive aspects of the gameplay that identify autism. The difference with how autistic children move their hands is quite different from other children. Children with autism move their hands as they touch, swipe and signals with the Ipad during the game.  37 autistic children between the age of three and six were examined by researchers. The researchers particularly noticed the children’s hand movement as they were asked to play games on tablet and computers that had touch sensitive screens and embedded movement sensors.

Autism affects people in different ways. Once researchers understand how motor disturbances may contribute to the complex image of autism then it will be possible that technology will be part of the diagnostic process. Technology has also been said to help parents and teachers deal with the autistic children better. Now that technology is cheaper and easier to use many autistic children can be taught using tablets and computers. This form of technology has been able to reduce the frustrations that autistic children feel when they are trying to communicate or understand something. With these new uses of technology the autistic society can at least integrate with the rest of the world.
