Nigeria’s Studacom.ng, a hyper local online student off-campus hostel and roommate finding platform is poised to make student off-campus hostel and roommate hunting as easy as possible online, and wherever they are.
Founded by Joel Amawhe, a 21 year-old web developer from Ozoro, Delta State, Nigeria, the platform aims to be the best platform in the country to help students find hostels in their vicinity, together with pricing, photographs and address. Users can browse, and find the contact details of hostel owners.
Though the service is free to use, for both students and hostel owners, hostels can boost their presence with a range of subscription options. According to Amawye, hostel owners and agents have always devised several manual means of advertising their hostels and some of the methods aren’t fruitful, a green pointer as to why Studacom will work.
”Out of the multitudes of students who are admitted each year into several institutions of study, only a few are accommodated within campus leaving the others to hunt for affordable and secured off-campus hostels as well as roommates. In their quest to do this, some are defrauded or victimized,” Amawye says.
His major competition now includes hostels.com, hostelhunting.com among globally and heyhostels.com.ng and hostels.ng in Nigeria but they are his biggest challenge as the concept of finding hostels online is a relatively new concept in the country with need for heavy user awareness to get more hostel owners to list their hostels. Also his lack of much fund to scale the business have affected its reach.
