Ada Lovelace day; the day women in science are celebrated

ada-lovelace

For many centuries, women were undermined and thought as weak. At some point girls did not have the liberty to education and when they did, they were told they could only pursue the arts while the sciences and technology were for the men. This is why a day was set aside to celebrate women that are in science while appreciating role models that managed to propel through this career that was not appropriate for women. Ada Lovelace is a great example, during her time she was schooled in science and Mathematics unlike majority of the girls in her time, which was around the 18th century. She is proof that if girls had the freedom to pursue what they actually wanted in various fields, they would have achieved much more than we could fathom. Because of her education she managed to be the first computer programmer.

Because of the fear that women in science and technology were going unnoticed, a brave woman in tech known as Suw Charman Anderson founded Ada Lovelace day in 2009 after she realized that women in tech were invisible. Besides the fact that today is the day we take time to appreciate such women there is a project behind this great day. It aims to motivate the women who are in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) through this program, role models are created and encourages ladies to not shy away from such subjects. In some countries such as the UK , there are events held on this day that host different science heroines that aim to encourage other young ladies through short talks and plays. Some may say that there are too many days used to recognize women’s achievements. But for many years women have been in a cocoon and failed to shine because they have lacked support and determination. Happy Ada Lovelace day, to not just women in science but to every woman that has worked hard to beat the system and achieve the impossible.
