Illegal music download is rife in Nigeria. It is not helped by the fact that anyone can simply go online to download any song of their choice. The internet has enhanced piracy. This situation is similar in the movie industry tagged Nollywood where popular movies are pirated.
Despite the prevalence of music piracy and illegal downloads, the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) and The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has been unable to deal with it even though they have made efforts.
Sadly, very few Nigerians are ready and willing to pay for downloading music.
As you know downloading music is illegal and in some countries, you can be jailed for this. Clearly, Nigeria is not yet at that level. Notwithstanding, there is now an online platform where you can legally download music. It is called PolesMusic.
PolesMusic is an online streaming site that will allow users download and listen to their downloaded songs on the platform and prevent them from sharing and distributing it illegally.
Alese Ayomide who founded PolesMusic in 2016 said: “The site will help fight piracy in Nigeria and across Africa. It will allow musicians to be rewarded for the good songs they create by making sure it is downloaded through the right platform and not shared illegally to other platforms that will encourage piracy which is a big problem in the entertainment world in Africa.”
Users can play or stream music from their favourite artists as well as enjoy every beat in a crystal clear way. In addition, they can pay for songs in naira at an inexpensive fee as well as subscribe and stream all songs with unlimited access.
With this, perhaps, Nigerians will be encouraged to pay for downloaded songs and in the long term battle piracy.
