Sports betting firm and site with same name SportPesa has become the main partner of England’s Everton Football Club, a nine-time English champion, signalling the firm’s growing expansion in the UK after earlier signing up Hull, Southampton, Arsenal Football Clubs.
The terms of the deal were not revealed but SportPesa UK Marketing Manager, Shaun Simmonds and Everton CEO, Robert Elstone said the deal will be effective from June 1. The deal will see SportPesa sponsor the club’s activities as well as feature on the Club’s shirts for the 2017/18 season.
According to Everton CEO, Robert Elstone: “We welcome SportPesa to the Everton family and look forward to working closely with a rapidly growing, global company. Over the coming months and years, we will work together to realise our ambitions. We look forward to an exciting partnership together.”
Locally, SportPesa is the main partner for Gor Mahia FC, AFC Leopards and recently Simba SC in Tanzania as it targets to grow its user base since its launch in Kenya in 2014. The expansion to other markets will help the firm expand its user base which is essential for its mass market SMS and online betting platform.
Headquartered in Kenya, SportPesa is also spreading its bets just in case the Kenyan government effects the 50% taxes on betting platforms to curb the vice and reduce the involvement of underage kids. The global expansion will be a plus in case the firm decided to move its base from Kenya to friendly markets to maximise its profits. Signing up Everton FC makes a lot of sense too as one of the top English Premier League teams with a very strong global following.
SportPesa UK Marketing Manager, Shaun Simmonds, underscored associating with Everton, one of the most respected institutions in world football, was in line with the company’s strategy of developing sports by expanding within the UK.
“We’re very excited about forming this partnership with Everton Football Club. Community, Innovation and engagement are key cornerstones which have contributed to SportPesa’s success so far and these are values that Everton Football Club holds at its core.” Mr. Simmonds added.
SportPesa’s Africa CEO, Ronald Karauri added, “We are very proud of the achievements of SportPesa UK and the SportPesa European activities. We are also excited about the synergies that this partnership will bring to Africa and Kenya in particular.”
