Microsoft and GrowthAfrica yesterday awarded 21 East African entrepreneurs in the second edition of the #Insiders4Good Fellowships to support their efforts  at turning their extraordinary social business ideas into reality.

The 21 East Africa Fellows who represent a diverse cohort from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda addressing critical social challenges, including youth unemployment, communication for refugees, access to credit for small businesses, and the digital divide facing rural areas will receive a suite of Microsoft hardware and software, and 6 months of tailored technical and strategic mentorship from local and international leaders.

According to Bambo Sofola, Microsoft Director of Software Engineering, “We were impressed by the problem-solving ideas of the East African Fellowship cohort. Many have identified opportunities to tackle longstanding social challenges through recent technological trends, such as mobile phone penetration and digital data. We look forward to working with the East African #Insiders4Good Fellows, helping them achieve their goals, and learning about their challenges and creative approaches to realizing their visions.”

The Fellows will kickstart the program with an intensive entrepreneurs’ bootcamp, where they will work with Microsoft and GrowthAfrica staff to build a solid foundation of business skills and mindsets, set goals for the program, and create a roadmap for achieving those goals. Microsoft says by working with the Fellows, it gains insight into how it can continue to evolve products to help entrepreneurs all over the world succeed. For example, during the Nigerian #Insiders4Good Fellowship, Microsoft’s technology team learned a great deal about the unique challenges faced by Nigerian entrepreneurs and is using these lessons to improve the Windows experience in low-bandwidth and occasionally connected regions. Co-creating the next evolution of Windows with users from all over the world is making Windows more innovative, responsive, and impactful than ever before.
The #Insiders4Good East Africa Fellows are:
