UPDATE: M-PESA won’t be offline Saturday morning

As part of the transition of Safaricom from a telco to an enabler platform, the company has been working on new changes to its MPESA platform. These change will mark the third major update to the platform since transferring its servers from Germany to Kenya.

Due to this upcoming update, MPESA is set to undergo various upgrades and it just underwent the first upgrade this Friday morning from 1AM to 3AM, only a 2 hour period at midnight so most users never noticed and were not be affected.

MPESA services will also be unavailable Wednesday July 5th morning from 1am to 3am and Saturday July 15th from 10pm to Sunday July 16th 9am,  its advisable to plan your transactions accordingly to avoid inconvenience.

The improved MPESA platform will come with updated features such as:

  • M-Shwari and KCB MPESA will be available in the My Safaricom App.
  • Faster way to integrated new partner services into MPESA, the process duration will be cut from several weeks to just a few hours.
  • New procedures will be put in place to reduce the number of times users make calls to the customer service.

“This upgrade paves the way for the next phase of M-Pesa and will enable the service to deliver even more value for our customers and partners.” Said Bob Collymore, Safaricom chief executive.

So now you know, the outages will be short and will occur in hours that most users are asleep. The only outage that is inconveniencing is the mid July one , but you have enough time to plan yourself accordingly before then, on the bright side, the MPESA service will swing out the other side much more improved and intuitive.
