First, this isn’t a sponsored post, it’s an observation. Welcome to a period where a large chunk of tertiary institutions have turned a blind eye on the burgeoning tech sector in the country. This is save for a few, like Covenant. Did I also mention that they do have a startup lab – See Hebron lab.
I have (always with an open mind) tried to see how universities in Nigeria try to inculcate tech into their activities, but always left disappointed. But again, having noticed the chunk of “tech people” that passed through Covenant university, I thought there must be something they are doing to improve students exposure in there, I hope. Check this list out.
Osarumen Osamuyi
An astute writer, was with TechCabal before this year, writes a very great newsletter and a major figure in the tech startup scene. Osarumen studied for a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics engineering in covenant university between 2010 – 2014. Oh, he leads research at Ventures Platform presently.
Odunayo Eweniyi
Odunayo was listed part of the power women in Fintech (list), and rightly so as she is the Chief Operating Officer at piggybank.ng. Studied Computer Engineering between 2008 – 2013 in covenant university too.
Somto ifezue
The CEO of Piggybank.ng, and a co-founder of Sharphire, Somto studied for a degree in mechanical engineering between 2018 – 2012. We do refer to him as Daenaerys Targerian (Mother of dragons) here.
Joshua Chibueze
Seem like Sharphire (PushCV) was a covenant university thing between the founders? Joshua is a co-founder too and has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer science from the university between 2008 – 2012.
Yemi Johnson
With (or not?) a covenant degree in ICT, Yemi Johnson is the Chief Operating Officer at hotels.ng. Was also in charge of growth at the company, and if things are as they seem, he did (is doing) a good job thus far. Oh, I’m not here to access individual work performances.
Akinola Falomo
CEO of Devcenter, you wonder how someone with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting is doing this much for developers? Simple: He had the degree in covenant. 2007 – 2011.
Tobi Ayeni
Tobi Ayeni is MissTechy. Her degree in Banking and finance from covenant university (2008 – 2012) did not stop her from venturing into tech.
Rotimi Okungbaye
Rotimi is currently a media associate with Andela, and got his covenant degree in Biochemistry (yes, BCH) between 2011 and 2015.
Phillip Ese
You know Alat, by Wema bank? Yeah? Philip is the product “owner”. He says he “helps to build great products and businesses”. Quite true with Alat, and with a bachelor’s degree in information and communication technology. Hey, it’s a covenant degree.

Bsc Accounting. 2006 – 2010.

Well, there are 13 names up there. True that there are much more from the University of Benin, and maybe LAUTECH but when this number is pitched against the total students in respective schools, then, covenant university seem to be a breeding ground for the “tech people”.
