The 2018 Family Business Conference is here, targets family business owners

The 2018 Family Business Conference, hosted by Association of Family Business Enterprises, is just around the corner. It targets family business owners from the region and purposes to look into the issues that affect family business plus how to solve them. This year the conference will be taking place on Thursday, May 24th at Raddison Blu Hotel, ball room. Here is brief of what the conference will entail.

There will be panel speakers and 1 keynote. The keynote will be delivered by a renowned family business expert Prof Elmaire Venter. She is a Family Business Consultant and the Director of Family Business Unit at Nelson Mandela University in South Africa. She will talk of her experience in working with family businesses, how to pass on entrepreneurial mindsets within the family business and stimulating panel discussions.

The other speakers will touch on other topics that relate to family businesses, they include;

  • Outlook for family businesses in Kenya – this will be a panel discussion covering the impact of technology, automation and current economic environment on family businesses and the considerations a family should make to maintain viable business entities. The key speaker handling this topic will be Michael Mugasa.
  • Why you should have a succession plan – This will also be a panel discussion that will delve into the process of succession, how to identify the next generation leaders, how to reduce risk of disputes and requirements for making a plan that grows the business and maintains family harmony. Patience Njau will cover this topic.
  • Mediation, an alternative for dispute resolution– this panel discussion will highlight the reasons why mediation is an effective mechanism for dispute resolution. The panelists made of mediators will share their mediation experiences and the benefits that come from it. The mediator speakers include Anne Mbugua, Sammy Mwangi and Joy Mbaabu.
  • Should you hire a non-family CEO? – This discussion will feature Non Family executives who are leading family businesses. Rose Lumumba will be the speaker in charge of this topic.
  • Taxation – this session will look at tax implications on various forms of businesses, succession, income settled on children and trusts, uncompensated work by employees who are family members and the use of company assets for family businesses. Francis Njau will take you through this topic.
