Gumtree South Africa has appointed Claire Cobbledick as General Manager replacing Johan Nel who has moved to OLX Group as its commercial Director: Asia, Middle-East and Africa.
Cobbledick joined Gumtree SA in 2014 as Head of Marketing and became Head of Core Business in 2016. She is a former MD of The Jupiter Drawing Room advertising agency in Cape Town and was marketing manager for Red Bull in SA.
Gumtree is the country’s biggest online classifieds site and currently has the highest volume of web traffic of any website in the country with 5.2m unique users per month. Cobbledick says “it’s a thrilling challenge to take on the GM role of such a thriving and important business that needs to constantly adjust to a very dynamic environment”.
Prior to joining Gumtree and the eBay Classifieds Group in 2014 as Director-GM of Gumtree South Africa, Johan Nel run a start-up which operated in 9 African countries. At Gumtree, Nel drove and oversaw numerous innovations and changes, such as the strategic monetization of key verticals, the introduction and formalization of its premium advertising offering as well as improvements to its platform and apps making it the second most trafficked site in South Africa, as well as the most trafficked automotive site and among the top ten most downloaded apps in the country as well.
In April, OLX Group had appointed Leonardo Rubinstein as the new CEO for the ALMEA region (Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Africa). The then CEO for Latin America was to lead the expansion and strategy of the platform in more than 30 markets, and is responsible for leading regions of great importance for OLX in 4 of the 5 continents where the Group has a presence (excluding Europe, Russia and the United States).
Based in Buenos Aires – where the technological hub of the platform currently stands, the engineer was in charge of important advances for the company such as the transformation towards a mobile first vision and expansion in Latin America through the opening of offices in 7 countries in the region. Among the key achievements on its management is leading the technology development that will be used in more than 20 markets, impacting millions of users worldwide.
