Bluewave Insurance Agency named “Best Startup in Kenya


Bluewave Insurance Agency Limited, an insurance startup in Kenya that is creating innovative mass market, microinsurance products accessible via mobile devices., was named by Seedstars Nairobi as the “Best Startup in Kenya” for its innovative sustainable solution.

“Winning seedstars was a strong affirmation that there is not a minute wasted if you have a passion to create an impact in your continent. The journey may seem long, hard and difficult but keep pushing harder, change will come, Never give up!”, explains Adelaide Odhiambo, CEO and Co-Founder at Bluewave Insurance Agency Limited.

As a part of the prize, Bluewave Insurance will be participating at the Seedstars Summit, which takes place in Switzerland, in April 2019. It is a weeklong training program, with the opportunity to meet the 65+ winners from other fast growing economies, as well as investors and mentors from around the world. The final day of the Summit is dedicated to pitching in front of an audience of more than 1000 attendees, with the possibility of winning up to USD 1 million in equity investment and other prizes.

The 7 startups pitched in front of a prestigious jury, including Teresa Mbagaya of Omidyar Network, Samuel Gikandi of Africa’s Talking and Maryam Mgonja, of Seedstars.

Optimetriks, with its Agile Sales Force Automation platform to help Africa’s FMCG companies better manage their distribution in the traditional trade, came second and Angaza Elimu, Creating edtech solutions to reduce content delivery inefficiencies that learners and teachers face in and outside of the classroom”  grabbed the last spot in the top 3.

The other startups invited to pitch were:

  • Bitshamba: Helps dairy farmers to get access to inputs, credit and insurance by using IOT based.
  • PataGrao Ltd.: an app through which a user can locate and book a sports facility ranging from pitches to courts, swimming pools and golf courses, among others.
  • Paybobby: A one stop platform that helps SMEs automate back-office activities to reduce operational wastage using “pay what you want” business model.
  • Gravity leverages blockchain technology to allow anyone to create a self-sovereign, data based digital ID to access essential services.

Continuing on its world tour of fast-growing startup scenes in emerging markets, Seedstars World’s next stop is Maputo at Standard Bank Incubator, to select the best startup in Mozambique. Seedstars World is looking for smart startups that solve regional issues and/or develop profitable products for the global market.
