SICO, Egypt’s smartphone maker planning expansion into Kenya and six other countries

Egypt’s first smartphone maker, Silicon Industries Corporation (SICO), has announced its plans to expand into seven new African countries, among them; Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Morocco, DR Congo, Ghana, Nigeria and Mozambique.

The company is targeting low-income earners in Africa with handset priced at under $100. The exporting of the phones is expected to begin by the end of the year or early next year. SICO’s Sales Director Ali told Reuters, “We are still entering the market and talking to people. We are working with several operators and hoping that [the phones] will be available at their branches at the end of 2018 or early 2019.”

SICO has already established its presence in Middle Eastern markets including the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The smartphone market in Kenya is largely dominated by Chinese manufacturers followed by Samsung.
