Every gearbox has gears and teeth. The gear ratio of a gearbox is associated with the number of revolutions that occur in between the teeth of two gears.
Gearboxes that have large gears will have more number of teeth in them.
Gear ratios are important as they determine how powerful a particular gearbox is. For example, a gearbox that has 24 teeth in the first gear and 12 teeth in the latter will have a ratio of 2:1.
It is the gear ratio that determines how much speed (RPM) will a gearbox require to produce motion.

3. Gear Placement
The arrangement of gears in a gearbox determines its efficiency and tells how much heat it will lose under operation. The rule of thumb is to opt for a gearbox that produces more torque in exchange for less amount of heat.
