2019 is finally here and as we know, Januworry is a busy month for everyone. But it shouldn’t get you down at all because Showmax Kenya has got you covered.

Instead of going out and spending money, save your coins! Stay in all weekend and binge-watch these shows. Selecting the best movies or TV series can be a tedious challenge especially if you are busy and back at work from holidays. Furthermore, instead of going through everything thrown at you this year, these TV shows on Showmax pack more than just dramatic plotlines, suspense and comedy; they deserve your time, and can offer some inspiration.

2019 isn’t off to a bad start after all;

Did you know? DStv Premium customers get Showmax for free. Just add Showmax to your DStv bill here ». For everyone else, get three months of Showmax for just KSH250 here »

1. We all deserve a second chance: Kevin (Probably) Saves the World

Kevin (Probably) Saves the World

Kevin becomes the unlikely small-town hero in this fantasy dramedy. Once a successful big-shot financial investor in New York, Kevin comes back to his hometown and moves in with his twin sister and niece after a series of failures in life that include a botched suicide attempt and losing his job.

Kevin is clueless and with no clear goal in life until something strange happens – a messenger from God, Yvette (a breath of fresh air) shows up and proclaims him one of the 36 righteous souls remaining on Earth (I know, but give this show a chance).

With this new responsibility, he has to become a good person by helping out others, thus building up his spiritual powers. Kevin is offered a second chance when he’s at the lowest point in his life, and throughout the series, he turns out to be the best thing that has ever happened to the town (probably). Watch now »

2. Be fierce and stand up for yourself: The Bold Type

The Bold Type should be a movement: imagine a show about 20-something millennials taking over the publishing industry in the world’s most competitive city – New York.

Meet Kat, Jane and Sutton, the three best friends who make The Bold Type one of the most empowering shows for women, millennials and anyone who dares to be unapologetically bold. Kat, Jane and Sutton know exactly what they want in their careers and in love. Yes, they do stumble once or twice but they really know how to stand back up and keep their head in the game.

3. Fight back, even if it seems impossible: The Handmaid’s Tale

How could a show about a dystopian militarised state that oppresses women in the name of religion possibly inspire you?

Well, meet June Osborn/Offred (Elisabeth Moss), a woman whose daughter was practically snatched from her arms, and who, despite being tortured both mentally and physically, just refuses to give up.

Hope is a tragedy in Gilead but it’s also the last thing that dies for June, who is so stubborn in her fight for freedom that when she finally has it, she refuses to leave her loved ones behind.

She fights back over and over, even when we think she has no chance of winning. Like June, take back your power in 2019, The Handmaid’s Tale S1 and 2 are streaming on Showmax. Watch now »

4. Be there for those who need you: Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies was that show that came into our lives quietly in 2017 and caused quite a commotion with its murder mystery storyline, powerhouse actors and a theme song that is honestly one of the saddest songs ever written.

This show, which unearths the secrets of the small town of Monterrey, takes us into the lives of five women who, despite their differences, form an unbreakable bond as they cover up a murder (ahem, this is not the lesson guys) to save a friend from a violent marriage (this is).

We also see the two women Madeleine (Reese Witherspoon) and Celeste (Nicole Kidman) embrace newcomer Jane (Shailene Woodley) who comes to town with her own set of problems – sexual assault from her past and an incident that brands her son a bully. It is this genuine friendship that gets her through the snobbish Monterrey gossip and the stigma that follows her young son.

Like I said in the beginning, 2019 is the year of weeding out terrible friends. Big Little Lies S1 is streaming on Showmax. Watch now »

Here’s more good news for you: Nicole Kidman recently revealed that Big Little Lies S2 will be coming to screens in June 2019. This year just keeps getting better and better.

5. Don’t let anything hold you back: The Good Doctor

When we first experience the genius mind of Dr Shaun Murphy, he dazzles everyone at the airport when he saves the life of a young boy – at one point even being tackled to the ground by airport security because of his awkwardness in expressing himself.

Shaun (Freddie Highmore) is a young surgeon living with autism who has just landed his first job at the prestigious St Bonaventure Hospital. He now has to navigate this new life while facing prejudice and scepticism from his colleagues, who don’t think he belongs anywhere near a hospital.

But despite his autism and a troubled childhood that will tug at your hearts, Shaun proves that he has an invaluable gift that can save lives. So yeah, if someone who has gone through such a tragic childhood and who’s constantly being judged for his social awkwardness can do it, so can you.

In 2019, don’t let anything hold you back. The Good Doctor is now streaming on Showmax. Watch now »

In case you have your New Year inspiration all wrapped up, you could also check these shows out just to keep busy as you strive to save some coins for that Valentine’s Day gift next month.
