BRCK acquires EveryLayer-run ISP Surf in a consolidation move

Nairobi-based company behind rugged WiFi routers for marginal areas BRCK has acquired ISP Surf and its U.S. parent company EveryLayer for an undisclosed amount in a consolidation move of its public and Matatu WiFi service dubbed MojaWiFi.

The Surf brand will be dropped for MojaWiFi after total integration in a quarter or two.

Speaking about the deal, Erik Hersman, BRCK CEO said, “Excited to announce the BRCK acquisition of Surf in Kenya, making our MojaWiFi one of the largest public WiFi networks in Africa with close to 500k monthly active unique users and 5m+ sessions per month.”

MojaWiFi and Surf, will provide internet to Africa’s growing populations especially to the lower middle class who cannot afford to pay for available internet services provided by telcos and other ISPs targeting high end estates and corporate firms.

The deal gives BRCK access to Surf’s 1200 hotspots and 200,000 active customers in Kenya as the firm plans to expand in Rwanda and across East Africa. BRCK’s MojaWiFi is being accessed by around 3.7 million users a month across city matatus and public hotspots. The addition of Surf further bolsters its market share against another low-cost internet service Poa! which is expanding across low-cost settlements in Kenya each month.

Recently, BRCK partnered with Clear Blue to provide BRCK with its Smart Off-Grid technology and service for a multi-year rollout of thousands of WiFi hotspots across Africa, set to begin in 2019 and running through 2024.
