ICT Cabinet Secretary Mr. Joe Mucheru has appointed four members to the board of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) in a Gazette notice issued on Friday, July 26, 2019.
In the notice, Mr.Mucheru appointed Mr. Mahmoud Mohamed Noor, Mr. Paul Muraguri Mureithi, Ms. Laura Chite and Mr. Jackson Kiprotich Kemboi to the CA board adding that the new members will help the board address issues such as competition and dominance in the telco sector, support innovation and ensure the right regulations are in place.
CS Mucheru also added that the government has no role in appointing or influencing the next Safaricom CEO even though the government is a shareholder. He also added the issue of the split of Safaricom is an internal affair and not the government’s.
According to the Kenya Information and Communications Act 1998, the CA board comprises a chairman appointed by the President, seven members appointed by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of ICT, and Principal Secretaries from Ministries of ICT, the National Treasury and that of Interior and Coordination of National Government.
The four will serve for a three-year term effective 18th July 2019. Established in 1999, the CA is the regulatory authority for the communications sector in Kenya.
Established by the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998, the Authority is responsible for facilitating the development of the information and communications sectors including; broadcasting, cybersecurity, multimedia, telecommunications, electronic commerce, postal and courier services.
The four will be current board of directors who include:
