Huawei Kirin 1020 Processor Features 50% Better Performance Than Kirin 990

Huawei Kirin 1020 is the only flagship processor to use to the Cortex A78 architecture.

The chipset supports s a smooth transition of the evolving 5G network.

According to gsmarena.com, Huawei has introduced an improvement in energy efficiency and 5G connectivity.

Its predecessor the Huawei Kirin 990 has quite an impressive performance. Together with the Kirin 980 series, they have an equipped SoC with 10.3 billion transistors and 7nn Euv technology. which makes them the first to support 5G.

The 990 series operates on an A76 cortex chipset that is slightly slower than the current A78 series.

The Kirin 1020 code is called Baltimore. This is a  normal trend with Huawei. The company names its chipsets after cities.

The chipset has a  TSMC’s 5nm processor. The processor supports better power efficiency and more stable performance. The bigger change comes with the CPU cores,

However, The Kirin 990 according to Huawei. It is the world’s 1st Flagship 5G SoC with 7nm+ EUV3. The processor features breakthrough technology and advanced intelligence, inherited from Kirin and Balong.

It is compatible with different bands and frequencies. The single chipset allows users to connect with 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks satisfying various requirements easily.

As seen, the 990 series is a far much better performer. The 1020 series probably will offer more than beast performance, especially with the Cortex A78 chipset.

That’s a huge upgrade to what was already a fairly speedy SoC. On top of that, it gives Huawei the upper hand against other competitors like the aforementioned MediaTek, who still rely on Cortex-A77 cores for performance. Nothing has been leaked regarding the GPU, but we’re hoping we can expect similarly big upgrade according to gizmochina.

The 990 processor currently supports the Huawei Mate 30 series and chances are, the new Kirin 1020 processor will power the Mate 40 series to be released in the prime of 2020.

According to a tip by GizChina, there is a possibility Kirin 1020 will support Mate 40 series. The tip noted that the component will be manufactured using the 5nm process, and since Huawei is one of TSMC’s top customers, we have no doubt that the Kirin 1020 will be produced by the world’s largest independent foundry. TSMC will start delivering 5nm chips to customers during the second quarter of next year.

At 5nm, the Kirin 1020 could contain as much as 171.3 million transistors per square millimetre.
